Dear XXXXX:

Thank you very much for your letter about the designation of future
school sites as surplus. I understand that you would like for this
request to be withdrawn. In your letter, you noted that many
students are being educated in trailers and many facilities need
renovation and additional capacity. This is clearly an important
public policy consideration.

Another very important public policy consideration is how to best
make safe, decent and affordable housing available to everyone in
Montgomery County. A child without a secure home is one that cannot
learn at all, regardless of the facility in which he or she is being
taught. In addition, we need to provide affordable housing for the
teachers who come into these classrooms and devote their time and
energies to educating our students.

I am sure that the Board of Education will carefully consider the
request to use the sites for housing. The Board will consider the
existing facilities in the area, student projections, and other
factors in determining whether these sites should be used for
educational needs or could be made available to further the public
policy agenda for affordable housing.

Again, thank you for taking the time to share your concerns with me.

Sincerely,

Douglas M. Duncan

County Executive
