Dear President Silverman,

 

I moved to Olney in August, 2004.  When we moved our family here from out of state I had two matters of concern.  Number one was that the area we would purchase a home in MUST have a good school district, with having 8 year old twins this was of utmost importance.  I spent many hours of research on the internet, phone calls etc. to search for an area that would have good schooling for my children.  My husband wanted to purchase a home in the Gaithersburg, Germantown area.  However, as I already stated schooling was most important to me and is what brought my focus to the homes in Olney.  I thought I had found the perfect place to raise my children.  This also brings me to my second concern.  We sold our home for just over $300 thousand (which put us in the middle class) and our hope was to purchase something in that market in Olney.  Upon looking at homes we discovered that there really wasn't anything for a family of four available in that market.  We had to pull a lot of strings to purchase the home we did and if you could make this easier for other people like us looking in this area it would be greatly appreciated.  It is important to provide housing for all income levels in a community.  Workforce housing is needed in order to retain the middle class such as ourselves.

 

Balancing new development with the roads, schools, and emergency services is very important in a master plan.  There is a right location for every type of project.  For the 32 acre property on Bowie Mill Road, I ask you to support the Planning Board's recommendation and retain the R200 zone.  This zone is compatible with the existing communities that surround the property, will keep the plan in balance with respect to our roads and schools, and most importantly, is the appropriate zone to build workforce housing units.  Please support the R200 zone for the 32 acre property and have work force housing as a portion of it.
